Telemark combines elements of Alpine and Nordic skiing. Its flowing turns are made with a free heel: the skier bends the rear knee and moves forward over the front foot. The technique gives Telemark its distinctive rhythm and makes balance and control central to every turn.
The discipline takes its name from the Telemark region of Norway. In the mid-19th century, Norwegian skier Sondre Norheim helped shape modern skiing through competition and innovations in ski design.
A challenge with deep roots
Telemark’s blend of balance, control and endurance makes it a rewarding challenge. For Royal Navy and Royal Marines participants, it offers a way to develop fitness, resilience and teamwork in the mountains, whether taking first turns or preparing to compete at the Inter-Service Ski and Snowboard Championships.
Newcomers and experienced skiers can both build their technique and progress towards competition.
Ex White Dagger
Ex White Dagger is a grassroots Telemark exercise held in Stubai, Austria. It is aimed at novice Telemark skiers who already have a foundation in Alpine skiing, with coaching to learn and refine Telemark technique. Check the Events page for current dates and availability.
